On a day trip

By some miracle today was a gorgeous, warm and sunny day, just when I needed it to be. It meant I could take my mother on a daytrip that had been part of my planning for when she was here but which would not have been very enjoyable had it rained all day.

First of all we went to Kippford, a tiny village along the river Urr estuary leading into the Solway Firth in Dumfries and Galloway, the most southerly part of Scotland. I first visited this delightful Scottish place when I went to see some friends who were staying in a caravan nearby earlier this year. At that time, we had rain almost non-stop but I could see what a wonderful place it would be in sunshine and was proved right today!!

We had a delicious lunch (traditional Scottish fish and chips) in the Anchor Hotel and went on a bit further up the road to visit Sweetheart Abbey, an Historic Scotland property. There are many ruined abbeys in Scotland and my mother and I have seen a fair number of them by now but this one was new to both of us and proved to be a gem.

The abbey had a beautiful graveyard next door so to speak and I found myself wandering around around graves for the second time this month. The abbey looked magnificent with the graves in the foreground and the sun above. Afterwards we managed tea and crumble to end our day in style!
