6. A Crooked Arrow

Time to show my latest Journal Quilt for the 52 Journals project this year where I hope to make one Journal Quilt for every week of the year. The latest one is inspired by a detail of the ironwork railings I saw when I visited Culter graveyard recently. You can read about my visit there in a previous blogpost.

I have no idea what made me grab the postage stamps. I wanted to make an interesting background for the arrow shape and somehow they came to mind. Maybe because I'm rather fond of postage stamps and also because to me they are a representation of the world, coming as they do from many different countries (some no longer in existence) and ranging from very old to quite recent. I glued them onto calico fabric (muslin in US speak) and then covered them with 2 layers of Mod Podge to seal the surface. Once that had dried completely I added the arrow shape which had been printed out onto canvas. I layered it with wadding to give it some depth on the page, and machine appliqued it on as shown, also stitching on some of the lines within the shape. I added gold foiling as well as beads. The final touch was the vintage text which reads: its aim a crooked arrow?

And finally the detailed photograph (yes, as per yesterday's post I seem to have so many details) of the ironwork railing which was used on the Journal Quilt, as you can tell well weathered and hopefully I've caught that in the fabric with the foiling.

If you're interested in seeing all the JQs I've done so far for this year, just click on the 52 Journals label beneath or check out the slide show in the side bar.

Hello Frieda,
Your newest quilt is stunning. Really, really, and really! If I were a cheerleader I would be hopping up and down with my pom poms yelling "Yay for YOU!".
O.k. I am a little feisty today!
I think this page is genius. You really are the most incredibly gifted artist! One day, I am going to see at least one of your quilts in person!
Hugs,
Terri

Every time I see one of the 52 quilt blocks, I think it is my favorite. Now this one I really do believe is my favorite so far. Beautiful and I like your adding what inspired you and how the design came about.
