Cash4Quilting

Some time ago I was contacted by one of the regular readers of this blog, Georgina, who asked me if I could contribute to the Cash4Quilting fund raising efforts. She had first come across my work by seeing my Venice Journal Quilts during a Quilt Association exhibition. The Quilt Association works to preserve the quilt heritage of Wales, and they want to raise money to fill the gaps in their collection of pieces. In order to do so they are asking people to contribute a A4 sized piece of work inspired by a quilt in their collection and these small works will then be sold for their funds.

As luck would have it (wonderful synchronicity!) I had just pieced some small batik blocks to try out stamping on them and once I started to look at the Quilt Association collection this brick wall top almost echoed the design of these blocks so it sort of seemed like it was means to be.

I used a digitally produced image which you have seen before here on one of my Lucy Journal Quilts. It seemed to suit the words I had already stamped on the blocks, such as Grief, Sadness but also Love and Hope. I went sort of mad with the embellishments which are hand-dyed lace flowers from a large curtain I bought many moons ago from a charity shop. And of course I could not help adding beads and buttons as well as the vintage text that reads: garlanded with flowers, and lower down: For beauty is the substitute for all things. I might not quite think it substitutes for all things but certainly the pursuit of beauty is one of the main aims in making my art.

Lovely Frieda - I'm just sorry I am on the wrong side of the pond else I would go to their event just to have the opportunity to "own" this. Well done...J

It is really beautiful frieda, I like the way you have made the "bricks" out of the batiks. The words seem so fitting to the image. Again, amazing work!

Been offline for a while and just seen this post - THANK YOU so much Frieda!! I had an email from Doreen Gough our curator singing the praises of this generous contribution but I have yet to see it for real - can't wait! Now all I have to do is release my attachment to it being the one I 'win' in the fundraising!!! Ooh I want it so much!!!! Om....
