The very last of the roses

Oh they look so sad now! The very last of my roses are really hanging their heads, because they have suffered a few night frosts, the first winter gales and bucket loads of rain. But they are still really beautiful in their own way. I know that any remaining buds will not make it anymore into full blown roses (check out Tristan's post about this too!) Instead there hangs about the roses a Miss Haversham atmosphere of past glories gone to seed. The rose above is Sally Holmes.

During the coming winter I will get my daily rose fix instead from Carolyn Parker whose Rosenotes blog will provide me with beautiful roses, photographed equally beautifully!!

This is Queen Elizabeth!

So here are the last pictures and a poem by Christina Rossetti whose words say it all as far as I am concerned:

In my Autumn garden I was fain
To mourn among my scattered roses;
Alas for that last rosebud that uncloses
To Autumn's languid sun and rain
When all the world is on the wane!
Which has not felt the sweet constraint of June,
Nor heard the nightingale in tune.

Broad-faced asters by my garden walk,
You are but coarse compared with roses:
More choice, more dear that rosebud which uncloses,
Faint-scented, pinched, upon its stalk,
That least and last which cold winds balk;
A rose it is though least and last of all,
A rose to me though at the fall.

aren't they sad?

my brave fellow still hasn't bloomed - I think he gave up the good fight.

Wow, that poem is spot on for these poor little roses! It's past time they took their Winter sleep I'm thinking...

I've enjoyed your beautiful photos throughout the growing season and this 'last' one does create a heavy heart.
