The Battle of the Sweet Pea

This battle has been raging here at Macbiehill ever since we first started to grow sweetpeas 15 years ago when we moved in. My mother-in-law who was my main source of knowledge regarding all garden related subjects adviced me to start cutting the sweetpea flowers just as soon as they appeared and that same advice was repeated in every book I've ever read on the subject. It's THE way to get more flowers to grow. It's the only plant in the garden that I cut religiously and I love having my little crystal vase with gorgeous blooms going right through the summer months. You will have seen a previous bunch on one of my Sketchbook pages, this is the present version!

But John gets really upset when I rob every single sweetpea plant from all its colour and he complains often and loudly despite being informed that if I left them in place they would stop flowering alltogether before too long.

So I sneak out of the house when he's not looking with my little snippers in hand in order to win this particular battle and we are rewarded with a beautiful scent wafting through the room too! How could anyone resist?
