Today was spent at the Spring Quilt Fair at Royal Highland Showground at Ingliston, Edinburgh where I indulged in some retail fabric buying therapy and also admired the various quilt exhibitions on show.
This was also the first showing of the travelling exhibition of A4 sized journal quilts, organized annually by Grosvenor Shows. The theme for this year was black and white. Above you can see my two contributions. Not the best photograph but they were hanging quite high so although I straightened the edges as much as possible during processing there are still some converging parallels there. Not to worry because underneath you can see each individual journal quilt. By the way all participants have to submit 2 journal quilts which can be a pair as mine are here but they don't have to be.
Mine are positive and negative and although not quite mirror images I like the idea that the two figures face each other when they are hung together. The positive one is above and called: Glory of the Moon. The figure comes from one of my own vintage prints and has been printed onto fabric. The background for both journal quilts is a collage of lace. The other figures of the houses, dogs, birds, trees etc. come from a Toile the Jouy fabric and are raw edges appliqued.
This is the negative and thus darker side where the negative image of the figure was used and more black lace was added to the collage background. This one is called My Destiny. Needless to say there is lots of embellishment in the shape of beads and sequins. I made both of these last year, so in addition to the 52 Journals I made then as well. They both have a very vintage feel to them and as always I loved to add all the sparkle.
The theme for 2013 will be Landscape and while wandering around the show an idea for that landed in my head! Fortunately I have till November this year to make those two.

Hmm, don't know if my comment showed up as I had to sign in . . . these are both so lovely frieda, the black and white allows for the lovely embellishment to shine! xo
Beautiful!
Lovely beadwork-such a beautiful group of work!
These are wonderful Frieda - and what a coincidence another of my friends posted a "black and white" project she is thinking of working on http://funoldhag-carol.blogspot.com/2013/02/maybe-next-project.html

These are spectacular Frieda. Love the positive and negative aspect of them too.
I don't think it would be easy to work with black and white exclusivly. You did an awesome job on the pieces.
Oh my oh my oh my!
Frieda, you really inspire me! I am in love with these black and white journal quilts. They are amazing and I too think it is fab that they hang face to face when closed. Love that there is the light and the negative!
All the laces, papers, fibers...all the things you used to build these designs are wonderful. Really.
Hugs,
Terri
