Modern Mini Mini

I hastened to Peebles this morning to catch the last day of the Blooms exhibition on at the Tweeddale Gallery and Museum there. Somehow as this show is nearby and was on for quite some time I tend to think there is plenty of time to go, but this was in fact the last day it was open and if you want to see it you better get your skates on as it closes at 12.30 today.

I then came back to find that the sun had appeared at Macbiehill and I used that to photograph this mini mini quilt. Like many people I spend more time than is good for me and my productivity on places like Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram. But occasionally I find such worthwhile information that I don't regret that time.

Such was the case with the #MMminimini (you don't want to try and type this quickly!) discovered on Instagram.
This is an initiative of the Make Modern quilting magazine published in Australia and from the hashtag I made my way to the magazine's Instagram feed @makemodernmagazine and website. That led to ordering a digital copy of issue 11 of the magazine which tells you all you need to know about miniminis. The essence is that these small quilts (no larger than 6" square or 15 cm) are a new phenomenon and started as swap items (much like Artist Trading Cards (ATCs), inchies, fabric postcards and the like) and of course they also have to be modern as defined by the Modern Quilt movement.

The magazine runs a competition on Instagram with the hashtag #MMminimini till the 20th June with prizes to be won (including for international participants) but in all honesty I liked the idea so much I would have grabbed some fabric and set to anyway. This is my first one, sized just under 6" square. I have the feeling it won't be the only one, and in fact I have an idea already about what I could do with a collection of them.

The mimimini no. 1 is machine quilted, raw edge appliqued, hand stitched and beaded. The binding too is raw edge appliqued with Bondaweb (WonderUnder in US speak) and then machine stitched.

this is such a wonderful example of the quilt art challenge you have described-a perfect combination of modern, color, and stitchery!
