Time already to upload another of my 52 Journal Quilts! I've reached week 11 and the journal quilt I made is sized 10 x 10". It was made for the March theme on the Sketchbook Challenge site which was: Flowers. At first I was a bit overwhelmed by the enormity of this subject, as well as by the many works of art already in existence that cover the length and breadth of floral inspiration but in the end I came up with a way to make the flower piece uniquely mine.
I used the image of a blue and white jug with the Willow pattern, that I had inherited from my mother-in-law. I photographed it specially for use in this piece (and also to serve as my blipfoto for that particular day) and printed it out onto fabric. As background I used a trellis furnishing fabric from Zophany for the background and machine quilted it following the trellis lines. The flowers were made from hand painted fabric and I used a Hampton Arts flower stamp in 3 different sizes. The individual layers were hand stitched, embroidered and embellished and then stitched on to the piece as shown.
I used the flower stamp again on shrink plastic, coloured it in, and then shrank it after make a hole in the middle so that I could sew these on too. They are the bright coloured little flowers you can see on the piece.
The final touches were the text: say it with flowers (made with my Dymo writer) and adding the equally trellis like binding and seed beading around it!
