16. Blue Door Journal Quilt

As I mentioned in my post re my journal quilt for last week I decided to make another one on the theme of Open for this weeks's model. The Sketchbook Challenge blog produces a new theme every month and last week their latest one OPEN was applicable to the JQ I was already making. But I always make the Journal Quilts for their theme sized 10" square so felt obliged to make another one for the same theme. And this time it is a very literal interpretation as OPEN to me immediately said door. And I had a very handy door to hand, the blue one I photographed some time ago for my daily blip (see last picture of this post). And I knew I had a brick themed fabric too. This fabric proved to be a bit bright for my liking so after quilting I painted it with emulsion paint (isnt' that whay you're meant to use on walls?!).

I printed this out onto cotton fabric, layered it with wadding (batting) and made it separately before applying it to the background. This made it possible for me to make the door actually open.

Of course the theme of OPEN demanded that the door could in fact be opened and would lead somewhere. I used the same method as I originally divined for a castle door in one of my Alphastamps projects, and I have to say it comes to something when you have to read your own instructions to discover how you did a technique! Old age must be catching up with me.

But I did it, as you can see above. The picture, taken during a walk in the hills above Eddleston last summer, was reproduced on silk and placed behind the door.

I then added the text: open to beauty.

Finally don't forget you can see all of the previous Journal Quilts by clicking on the 52 Journals label below this post or in the sidebar and in that same sidebar on the right-hand side of this blog you can see a slide-show of all the JQs made so far this year.
