Collage with Recycled Item

It's Sunday and the new challenge for The Documented Life Project was announced last night. It is: "collage something you recycled". There is no shortage of recycling material coming through our letterbox on a daily basis so that shouldn't be much of a problem. I grabbed a Wrap catalogue from the bin (the face came from that ) and also used pages from that combined with an old painted paper featuring circles, an old gelli print, and some mopping up paper that I had used underneath my painting surface to put my used stencils on to dry ( which provides a great ghost print). I also decided to use a method I had long wanted to try out and which you can find on the Add to, Undo @ Redo video by Jenny Cochrane Lee (available from Cloth Paper  Scissors magazine, where paper snippets are stitched together. That's how the background came to be.

To unite all those disparate papers I used a yellow Golden fluid acrylic paint, and then stencilled circles on top using spray paint and finished off with gessoed circles, both large ones with the stencil and small ones using punchinella (or sequin waste). The piece was then layered with a piece of painted circles paper and a grid was stitched on top with black thread. I rounded the corners and added black washi tape all round, using one side to attach the piece into my 2014 Moleskine planner.

Finally I glued on the text which came from an old magazine and I emphasized the edges with black Stabilo All pencil and a water brush. Some scribbling with black and white pens as well as watercolour pencils was the finishing touch.
