Another day in New York

On day one of our tour we were given a wonderful talk by the Americal quilter Paula Nadelstern in the City Quilter shop and of course had an opportunity to shop in this iconic New York quilt store. I was lucky enough to be given some beautiful fat quarters featuring the unique New York themed fabric specially commissioned by the shop and only available from them as part of my prize (which of course also included this trip itself!). After lunch in a typical New York deli (called Sunac) we set off on an afternoon bus tour led by our very knowledgeable guide Riley (hope I have spelled her name right!).
Our first stop was St. John the Divine Cathedral where we saw the Peace Fountain made by Greg Wyatt. You can see a detail on the above picture as well as on the last picture of this blog post.

Then it was on to the Riverside Church. Notice how beautiful it looks against the blue sky. And amazingly, as it turned out, we had that blue sky all the way through our entire New York trip. There was a bit of rain at some stage but that was all. It made all the difference to the photographs and our many walking ventures.

The Grant Memorial, right next door to Riverside Church was next. This is the final resting place of President Ulysses Simpson Grant and his wife, Julia and the largest mausoleum in North America. It has a splendid arched ceiling and has a message of "Let us have peace" on it's façade that is as pertinent now as in the days it was built.

There were also some lovely mosaic benches around the mausoleum by the artist Pedro Silva and the architect Phillip Danzig.

I also loved the messages on the fencing around St. John the Divine.
