The 100 Fiber Fundraiser Piece

You may remember that back in February I participated in a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society organized by the American artist Virginia Spiegel. At that time I showed you the piece I made for this event. That winged it's way to The  States to one of the $100 donors.

I also participated in another way by donating $100 myself and today I'm showing you the beautiful art piece I received made by Ann Flaherty and that now hangs in my studio as you can see above. It looks even more fabulous in real life than on the online pictures Ann posted and I will treasure it.

Most of today will be spend in that studio as the weather can only be called grim! And I feel a spot of painting coming on.

The 100 Fundraiser Day

Today is the big day! This is when the American artist Virginia Spiegel hopes to raise $10.000 for the American Cancer Society. Together with her other fundraising events in the past (and I'm pleased to have been a part of some of them) that will mean she has raised an astonishing quarter of a million dollars for this very deserving cause. You can find out how to take part here.

Basically the idea is that 100 fiber artists have donated their work and the postage costs to send it anywhere in the world to the first 100 people that contact Virginia for a link to donate $100 to the cause. Who gets which artwork will be determined by a random number allocator. You need the link from Virginia to donate and get the art. It all kicks off at 10.00 am Central Standard Time which is 4pm here in the UK. So at 4pm be ready to send that e-mail to Virginia to request the link!. Again, all the information you need can be found by following this link. The only other thing necessary is your credit card!

You will have seen all the detailed photographs before in the months leading up to this day but I'm now revealing the entire piece at the top of this post. It measures 8 x 11" and has a hanging sleeve on the back. Should the buyer want to frame the art piece, the hanging sleeve can be removed easily. The piece is called: Up in the Air.

All the artists were asked to contribute a piece of art with a retail value of at least $100. This piece is slightly larger than my usual journal quilts which sell for £125. As far as I can tell all the participating artists have gone out of their way to make their piece for this fundraiser way beyond the $100 value. I can't wait to hear where this piece is going and I'm also going to sit at the ready with my finger on the button so to speak to send Virginia an e-mail at 4pm sharp. Hope you'll do the same in whatever timezone you're living. Remember it's the equivalent of 10 am Central Time It's going to be mayhem in her inbox! I will of course let you know what happened tomorrow. Hope you too are getting ready to donate.

Up in the Air

This will be the last glimpse you are getting of my Up in the Air piece made for the fundraiser organized by Virginia Spiegel for the American Cancer Society. You can read all about it here. It's now little more than a week away and will happen on Wednesday 4th February at 10 am Central US time which I make to be 4pm here in the UK.

By being one of the first 100 people donating $100 to the American Cancer Society via Fiberart for a Cause you will a piece of art from one of the 100 artists who have donated their work. All the information regarding how to donate is on Virginia's website.  This includes the postage to wherever you happen to be in the world, also donated by the artists involved. The allocation of which piece you will receive is done by a random number generator so it will be a surprise. I love that part of it.

I will reveal my entire piece on the morning of the 4th February and will wait with baited breath to see where it's new home is going to be. And yes, I will also participate by trying to obtain someone else's work. The art made for this project is just fabulous and whichever piece you receive after your donation I can guarantee you'll love it! All the artists have put their heart and soul into their art for this very deserving project.

The first 100 patrons who donate $100 dollars to the Amarican Cancer Society via Fiberart For A Cause will each receive one of those pieces of art. Which one that is going to be will be determined by random number generation so it will be a surprise. Looking at the names of the contributing artists one thing is for sure: you will love the art. I'm showing you glimpses of the piece of art I made here on this blog in anticipation of the big day. My piece called Up in the Air is 8 x 11" and comes with a hanging sleeve. My small A4 journal quilts retail at £125 so this one will go at considerably less for the fundraiser. As you can see it has been embellished lavishly and also incorporates gelli plate painted fabric. I am already looking forward so much to that Wednesday when I will also try and buy one of the other artists' pieces. So exciting! I will be continuing to share glimpses of my piece here over the coming weeks till the big day arrives. Finally I do get asked why the American Cancer Society? Well, it doesn't matter where the research is done to find a cure for this horrible disease. Once found it will help save lives all over the world and that is what is important.

Fiberart For A Cause The 100 Fundraiser

It's time to reveal the latest Fiberart For A Cause (FFAC) project to you. I've been keeping it under wraps till Virginia Spiegel announced it on her website yesterday, but I'm over the moon to tell you that I'm one of the 100 fiber artists participating in Virginia's latest fundraising idea for the American Cancer Society. And I'm in great company, in fact I don't think I've ever been in better. The list of participating artists is awe inspiring. In short it works like this: Virginia has selected 100 fiber artists to make a piece of art with a minimum retail value of at least $100, of any size, although pieces smaller than 8 x 10" will be mounted to reach that size. On the 4th February 2015 at 10.00am Central Time (that's 4pm here in the UK) the first 100 people who donate $100 directly to the American Cancer Society through Fiberart For A Cause will receive an artwork from one of the 100 artists. Which one they receive, will be determined using a random number generator. And that will result in 100 x 100 = 10.000 dollars raised! How exciting and impressive is that!

What makes it even more amazing is that at the end of this event Virginia will have raised one quarter of a million dollars for the American Cancer Society through Fiberart For A Cause over the years.

I'm going to be a proper tease with the piece I made! It suitably has the title Up in the Air and measures 8 x 11". It has a sleeve for hanging attached  I'll reveal little details of it over the coming months until the 4th February arrives, when I will show you the entire piece here on this blog before it will be send off to the randomly selected donor! You can see the glimpse for today above. Techniques used are gelli plate printing, hand embroidery and beading as you can see. And a lot more! Watch this space, as the saying goes!

It's such a pleasure to participate once again in Virginia's fundraising and considering the list of artists I would be quite keen to acquire one of those pieces of art myself!
