The art of Frida Kahlo is always inspirational to me (and not just because of her name!), as are the images of the artist herself and I can’t resist regularly making Frida inspired art.

StencilGirl January 2022 project

Another year has passed and a new one looms. We are now getting used to the uncertainty all around us concerning many different issues and as we have little control about any of them perhaps the only thing we can do is hope for the best and carry on doing what makes us happy! So I want to wish you a very creative 2022! I’m very happy to be invited back here by Stencilgirl® Products to share what I do with their wonderful stencils.

StencilGirl September2021 Project

I started this month’s project with 6 A4 (or American letter size if you prefer) paper, a selection of colours of acrylic paints that I really did not like, together with black and white paint, and 4 stencils that I had not used much (judging by the lack of paint on them). The stencils were: the large stencil from the October 2020 Stencilgirl® Club stencil set. Stencil L703 Forest Floor, the large stencil from the June 2018 Stencilgirl® Club and the large stencil from the March 2021 Club set. And I also used a gelli plate, sized 8 x 10”. All this just to wake up to what I am. Because that is the next line in Ben Okri’s poem that I continue to illustrate: “Wake up to what you are”. For me adding an image of Frida Kahlo to the mix suited the words considering my own name. Frida used to spell her name with the additional e too but dropped it during the first World War.

Collage 44

With the arrival of Collage 44 also comes the realization that there are only 8 weeks more to go this year! How did that happen?

This one was partly inspired by the text which came from a variety of sources but somehow came together as reading: "I wish I was a butterfly, I'll dance every day, flying in the past". In the background the prone figure is from a self portrait by Frida Kahlo, while the head came from the painting Portrait of a Young Girl by Petrus Christus (approx. 1470). Her head was placed onto a golden butterfly.

Collage 16 features the inspirational artist Frida Kahlo surrounded by colours and a postage stamp that suited her in my opinion. This is the latest collage for my #52collages2019 project this year, all done in a 5 x 8" Moleskine notebook.

Collage no. 5

Here is collage no. 5 for my #52collages2019. One thing that I'm noticing more and more is that what these weekly, daily or monthly projects tend to do is make it feel that time does indeed fly. This morning for the first time the dog walk took place when the sun was already fully above the horizon and the darkest days are behind us. It helped that it was a cloudless, frosty day but still, it makes such a difference to have the light return.

As I've mentioned on previous posts I'm  making a weekly collage this year in an 5 x 8" Moleskine journal, using just images from a wide variety of magazines and my trusty UHU glue stick. This one is dedicated to the artist Frida Kahlo, not exactly a stranger in my art. I love both her work and the way she lived her life with great courage and perseverance.

Choices

Our prompt on Joggles Art Journal Adventures this week was to use a quotation. As it happens I have used quotes on every single spread I did for the Adventures this year and on most of my other art journal pages. I love words on my pages and quotations are a great way to add them. I also collect them, either cutting them out or writing them down manually, and also adding them to a digital Word file. That means I always have lots of choice which one to add. Therefore it seemed appropriate to use a quotation about choice for this spread, done in an A5 journal.

The quotation I used is by John C. Maxwell and it reads: "Life is a matter of choices and every choice you make, makes you". I decided that Frida Kahlo was a great way to illustrate those words.

For the background I used acrylic paints and S433 Amsterdam 6 stencil by Stencilgirl, designed by Nathalie Kalbach. I collaged on a collection of text (some vintage) and added some self adhesive stickers from my collection (the circles are by Robin Marie Smith). I also added some stamping with a text art foamie called Writer's Block designed by Julie Fei-Fan Balzer

I then spray stencilled on Frida's face using the large stencil from the September 2013 Stencilgirl Club. The other Frida figure on the left comes from a set of Artists Notecards (produced by The Unemployed Philosophers Guild) .

The words of the quotation are a mix of words cut from magazines and letters from a self-adhesive alphabet set. Finally I did some outlining with black and white markers and the pages were done.
